« WE CAN
DEPOLLUTE OURSELVES » is a 90 or 100-minute documentary film
by Suzanne
Körösi that focuses on global pollution. It
is based on the namesake book by Professor Gilles-Eric
Séralini (2009 ed. Josette Lyon). It investigates
on the
ideological and economic premises that generate polluting activities
(Part I.) but also searches into alternatives for non -polluting and
depolluting practices (Part II.).
Several recent documentaries have addressed the issue of global
warming, most of them urging on the necessity for the consumer to
change his/her attitude. Although many of these films do address some
aspects of pollution, they fail to highlight in a systematic way the
real danger it represents for human health and the survival of
humankind on the Planet.
The film will raise the following question : Why are national and
international regulations on toxic materials based on obsolete
evaluation criteria ? The film will also try to explore the current
political and economic mechanisms that create serious obstacles to
depollution and non-pollution. Therefore we will be able to go beyond
the ideological framework which tends to insist exclusively on the
responsibility of individuals/consumers.
We would like to contribute to a general awareness that diseases linked
to polluted air, water, soil and food are to spread at an accelerated
pace if no new regulations based on appropriate evaluation criteria are
implemented at national and international levels. We aim to sensitize
decision makers at all levels and try to make them understand the
causes and consequences of pollution as well as the urgency of taking
mesures that help restore healthy life conditions for all.
The case of genetic pollution underscores how important scientists are
when it comes to raising awareness in the public opinion. (An example
of that is to be seen in the significant opposition of the public
opinion against GMOs in Europe - Austria, France, Italy, Hungary
– where leading biologists had taken a critical position
against this technology.) This is the reason why the film is structured
around the personality and everyday work of a biologist, an
international expert in environmental diseases, Professor Gilles-Eric
Séralini, from the University of
Caen, France.
As a scientist, Professor Séralini considers that dialogue
and debate are also at the heart of his mission. We will follow him in
his travels, lectures and meetings in France, Germany, Belgium, Canada,
the US, Mexico and South Africa, listen to his conversations with his
students and colleagues as well as with business executives,
journalists, politicians and environmentalists.
The public will be led into the fascinating world of scientific
research and will be introduced to the ethical choices and dilemmas a
scientifist encounters in his/her career.
The other topic of the film (Part II.) will present women and men,
creative farmers, locally elected officials and activists in several
regions of the world who invent new and efficient systems of land and
business management, aiming at getting rid of those activities that
lead to pollution. Our objective is to show that even in the current pollution-friendly
political and economic environment there are truly
inspiring attitudes and achievements are possible and can provide food
for thought and encourage other people in other parts of the world in
their depolluting and non-polluting initiatives. Nevertheless we hope
the audience will be convinced that all efforts must be made to change
this pollution-friendly political and economic environment.
« WE CAN DEPOLLUTE OURSELVES » is shot for cinemas,
film festivals and TV chanels but also for all public debate networks.
